Benchmarking (continued):
• 3DMark 2001SE:
3DMark 2001SE is by far the oldest benchmark being run, but I felt it was appropriate to include the full suite of 3DMark tests. It provides a good gauge of DirectX 8 performance, and as you can see by the results below, the V8 still gets beat by the Radeon 9600, but overclocking at least makes it competitive (higher is better)...
• D3D RightMark:
D3D RightMark is a fairly new benchmark (still in BETA release from Rightmark.org) and I thought I would give it a try for the XGI Volari reviews. According to their website "D3D RightMark is an independent non-commercial open-source graphics card benchmarking project" that can be used "to help users estimate graphics cards performance and quality in synthetic tests and real apps, e.g. games." There is a common interface that launches a batch of benchmarks that test various aspects of a video cards performance, and three of the results are presented below. All results are in terms of frames per second (higher is better)...
The first set of results are from the portion of the benchmark that tests the point sprite drawing speed. The V8 does much better than the V3XT, but can not compete with either the 5500 OC or the 9600.
The next set of results are from the portion of the benchmark that tests the pixel shader processing speed for PS 1.1, 1.4, 2.0, 2.0a, 3.0. Again, the V8 can beat its little brother quite easily, but can't even come close to the other two cards.
The final set of results from D3D RightMark are from the portion of the benchmark that tests the geometry processing speed for T&L FFP and VS 1.1, 2.0, 3.0. The V8 comes close to the 5500 OC in this test, but yet again fails to beat it or the 9600.
