Benchmarking:

For comparison purposes, the same configuration mentioned above was also installed on an ABIT IS7-G motherboard. The IS7-G is a mainstream i865PE based motherboard that should provide a good point of reference to this FoxConn unit's performance.

The two motherboards were run through the following set of benchmarks:

• SiSoft Sandra 2004 CPU Arithmetic Module
• SiSoft Sandra 2004 CPU Multimedia Module
• SiSoft Sandra 2004 File System Module
• SiSoft Sandra 2004 Memory Module
• AIDA 32
• PCMark04
• PCMark2002
• PiFast 4.2
• ScienceMark 2.0 Cypher Benchmark
• AquaMark3
• 3DMark03
• 3dMark2001SE
• UT2K3
• PowerDVD VGA Speed

The first nine benchmarks listed above will provide various glimpses of the overall system performance using the 865M01-G-6LS. The last five benchmarks listed above are more focused on video performance, and will be used to compare the onboard Intel Extreme graphics processor (set to the maximum 64MB) to the 128MB Radeon 9600XT used on both motherboards. It should be mentioned before anyone sees the results from the graphics benchmarks that the onboard video will not match up well with the Radeon 9600XT due to lack of DirectX9 support. The onboard video is obviously not intended for the serious 3D gamer, but more of a basic option for desktop applications.

SiSoft Sandra 2004 CPU Arithmetic:

The CPU arithmetic module of SiSoft Sandra is a synthetic benchmark which provides a solid test of the systems processing power and provides three results, as shown. From the graph below it can be seen that the 865PE based ABIT board and the 865G based FoxConn board are on the same plain for performance at this particular task.

SiSoft Sandra 2004 CPU Multimedia:

This module of the SiSoft Sandra suite tests the cpu performance while generating a fractal. "Floating Point" and "Integer" results are obtained, each with units of it/s and are graphed below. As shown, the boards both score well, and the margin between them is fairly insignificant.

SiSoft Sandra 2004 File System:

The file system module tests the data transfer rate of hard drives installed in the test system. Since I was using a PCI card based RAID array, the results aren't indicative of the onboard IDE performance, but show how these particular drives perform on this particular RAID card on the two motherboards. As seen in the graph below, a 5 MB/s advantage is seen in the transfer rates when using the ABIT board.

SiSoft Sandra 2004 Memory:

The memory bandwidth portion of the SiSoft Sandra 2004 benchmark reads/writes large chunks of data to memory, with minimal cpu utilization, and reports its results in MB/s. As seen in the graph below, the 865PE based ABIT board holds roughly a 10% edge on the 865G based FoxConn board.

AIDA 32:

AIDA 32 is a recently discontinued system diagnostic program that includes one benchmark... for testing the read/write speeds of system memory with results in MB/s. The results are graphed below and show the FoxConn board trailing by a slim margin while writing, and a more sizeable margin while reading.

PCMark04:

One of FutureMark's benchmarks, “PCMark04 is an application-based benchmark and a premium tool for measuring overall PC performance.” Providing results in unitless “Marks”, a composite score is achieved for the system as a whole. The results below show the ABIT board holding roughly a 21% advantage over the FoxConn board in this test.
