Thermalright IFX-14 CPU and Back-side Heatpipe Cooler
July 09, 2008

Thermalright is a well known maker of high quality, solid performing cooling products designed to fit a variety of computer components. While the most notable product in their current lineup may be the extremely popular Ultra-120, this review will be focusing on a newer offering that hopefully provides equally impressive results; the IFX-14 (Inferno Fire Extinguisher) CPU and Back-side Heatpipe Cooler.

The promotional image above shows the IFX-14, which features a well constructed, nickel plated heatpipe design that uses soldered joints, just like most of Thermalright's other offerings. This product should be considered a "cooling system" rather than merely a heatsink, since it comes paired with a back-side heatpipe cooler (also shown above). This is an interesting inclusion that shows Thermalright's desire to maintain their leadership in the high performance cooler market.

Before taking a closer look at the sample provided for review, let's look at some of the published data on the IFX-14, as taken from the product page on the Thermalright website.

Features and Specifications:

» Larger surface area than any other heatsinks (140mm x 120mm) with option to install one or even two 140mm fans.
» Designed for better air flow management to work with the heatsink fans and the air inside your computer case.
» Four large 8mm heat pipes to distribute massive amount of heat fast and efficiently.
» Optional to rotate the heatsink 90 degrees to best fit your system configuration.
» Multi-platform compatible backplate for installation on vast number and type of motherboard. No need for complicated tools to convert.
» Heat pipes soldered to base (nickel plated) and fins for optimum heat transfer.
» Includes a back-side dual heat pipe heatsink (patent pending), which not only additionally cools your CPU but also takes care of the heat coming from the back of the motherboard to extend the life expectancy and stability of your motherboard.
Heatsink Body Specifications:

» Dimension : L146.2 x W124 x H161 mm (heatsink only)
» Weight : 790g (heatsink only)
» Recommended Fan : All 120mm & 140mm Fan

Heatsink Back-side Specifications:

» Dimension : L134.5 x W163.5 x H112.6 mm (heatsink only)
» Weight :150g (heatsink only)
» Recommended Fan :All 80mm & 70mm Fan

» Intel: All Intel Socket LGA775 processors, Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Extreme ready!
» AMD: Athlon64 / FX / X2 / Opteron Socket AM2 processors
» AMD: Socket 939 compatible with 939 bolt thru kit, sold separately.

Packaging:

Thermalright products are easily recognizable by their rather nondescript packaging. The IFX-14 arrived well packed and loaded with hardware, with each component surrounded by foam to insure they remain damage free.
