Testing:

The following components were loaded into the HEC Group 6C28 ATX PC Case for testing.

• AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Processor (Venice core)
• MSI RS480M2-IL Radeon Xpress 200
• OCZ DDR400 512MB (256 x 2)
• Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 160GB Serial ATA 7200RPM HDD
• NEC 16X DVD Burner 3520A
• Windows XP x64 Professional

To test the cooling capabilities of the case I ran both SiSoft Sandra 2005 & 3DMark05 to get the components warmed up. For Sandra, I ran the test through 10 loops of the CPU benchmarks, and through a complete test loop on 3DMark05. I took the temperature readings before starting any tests, and then recorded the highest temperature hit while the tests we're running.

As you can see from the data above, the included fan was able to keep the system cool enough to not cause any problems. However, with two 92mm fans installed the performance would no doubt be even better. Having an intake and exhaust fan is generally the recommended design, and HEC should consider including another fan, and preferably a 92mm model.

Conclusion:

The HEC Group 6C28 is an attractive case that allows the stealthing of all of your CD/DVD drives. I found no sharp edges, or other issues that detract from the design of many cases. The only issues I can find with this case are the missed opportunity of the vendor to include some quiet 92mm fans, and how tight the hard drives fit into the cage. While the fan issue can be resolved by buying some 92mm fans, the narrow opening of the drive cage is what really concerns me. If the drive fails, would the drive vendor void the warranty because of the physical damage?

Searching for one of this case proved to be a difficult task. PriceGrabber has nothing to offer, but browsing elsewhere shows that places like Directron carry the case (with a 300W psu) for just over $40. Definitely a competitive price for a case such as this.

Overall I have to give this a final rating of 4 out of 5 stars... "Recommended".

Final Rating (4.5 out of 5 stars):

Pros:

• Stealthed CD/DVD drive enclosures
• CPU air tunnel
• Attractive styling
• Ability to add 2 92mm fans

Cons:

• Only 1 80mm fan included
• Lack of a real tool less design
• Hard drive cage is too narrow, and causes physical damage (scraping) to the drive
