RedPower In Dash Radio/DVD/CD/MP3 Player with 3.5
October 04, 2006

The Basics (continued):

Now that we looked at the front end, let's take a quick look at the heart of the RedPower 990DVD-4. The main housing of the device is much like any other in dash stereo, and isn't too exciting. The below left image shows the panel where the front face mounts, as well as providing the opening for the slot loading optical drive. Here you also have the eject button, an LED status indicator, and another LED which blinks when the system is off (like an alarm indicator spoof). The entire unit can be detached from a thin steel mounting frame using two included keys, which could make removal easy.

The above right image shows the back of the unit which is where all the connections are made and aluminum fins serve as heatsinks. All of the tethered connections are for auxiliary inputs/outputs and antennas, and a 14-pin connector in the lower left corner is where you make the connections for speakers and power. There are a variety of input/output connections, which would allow you to connect things like a backup camera, an extra monitor, and perhaps another input source like a computer.

The image below shows the included wiring harness that mates with the 14-pin connector shown above. The black box is on the main power line, and houses a fuse. All wires and connections are well labeled, so installation should be as straight forward as possible. There are quite a few connections to be made, so I will not say it is easy, but they do eliminate the guess work.

Another feature to aid installation is shown in the image below; a map of the wires as they come off the 14-pin connector. All you are left to figure out is the wiring already in your car, or to buy a wiring harness specifically designed for your make and model.
