Packaging:
The box for the RedPower 990DVD-4 is what you might expect for something to be found on retail shelves. It shows the product, some of the basic features and specifications, and even throws in a few silhouettes of a leaping jaguar for good measure.
Inside the box, we see that the components are well protected by custom cut pockets in a foam block. The bulk of the items are given an extra measure of protection by being sealed in plastic bags, while the front face of the 990DVD-4 is actually shipped inside the black plastic case visible in the below right image. This plastic case is intended for use when storing the front face after installation, so why not use it for shipment?
The included remote control is quite thin and compact, but absolutely packed with buttons. I found that some of the functions, especially related to DVD and MP3 playback, require that you keep the remote handy.
The Basics:
With everything unpacked from the box we'll start our inspection by looking at the front face. The black plastic case provided for storage is just hard plastic with a few meager strips of foam inside for protection. It isn't the nicest thing you'll ever see, but it kept the face safe in transit, and should serve well to protect it once installed in your car.
Below we see an overview of the detached face plate. The bulk of the controls are located on the left hand side, while the 3.5" TFT LCD is located on the right. We'll take a closer look at each "half" as we proceed, but some of the significant features are worth noting now. The bulk of the surfaces and buttons are black plastic with white text, and a few chrome accent pieces and one oversized button add a bit to jazz up the appearance. Overall the appearance is attractive, and the use of chrome was kept in check as to not make it look gawdy. A variety of features are printed on the front face in unused areas, confirming things like support for SD cards, DVD Video, that the screen measures 3.5 inches, and so on.
