E-Power Technology Silent Engine Tiger 550W PSU - Page 5 of 5 |
Installation and Performance (continued):
The next thing that concerned me was how well the fan would perform. The Enermax CS718B case I am using has a very unusual layout that relies on the power supply to cool the hard drives. Rather than try to explain the layout of the case I will let a picture show it.
As you can see the fan from the power supply is the only cooling the hard drives get. The Enermax power supply that had been powering the system had a 92mm and an 80mm fan that did a fair job of cooling the hard drives. If you look closely at the picture the wire sticking up between the two hard drives is actually a temperature probe that I use to monitor temperatures in the hard drive area. I have to admit I was some what concerned if the temperature controlled 120mm would cool the hard drives as well. My concerns were quickly laid to rest as the Silent Engine Tiger 550 fan kept this temperature probe reading 2 degrees Celsius cooler than the Enermax 460 did, and it did it while living up to its name and being virtually silent.
Conclusion:
E-Power Technology has a real winner on their hands here. The Silent Engine Tiger 550 not only looks great, but it performs equally as well. The modular cable design and virtually silent operation of the cooling fan are great features. We were unable to find the Silent Engine Tiger 550 available anywhere at the time this review was published, but E-Power Technology assures us it will be available soon at several major e-retailers. Price is also some what of an unknown at this time, but a competitive price would make this PSU even more worthwhile.
For the performance, quality, and style, I have to give the E-Power Technology Silent Engine Tiger 550 Power Supply a final score of 4.5 out of 5 stars... "Readily Recommended".
Final Rating (4.5 out of 5 stars):
Pros:
• 550 watts of quality power
• High quality construction and finish
• Modular cable design
• Extremely stable voltage rails
• Virtually silent fan operation
• High quality sheathed cables
Cons:
• Not available at time of writing
• An override control of cooling fan and case fan lead would be a nice touch.
