Does anyone have experience using HP cameras and printers in Linux? Is there anything like HP Director for it?

My inlaws were given an HP digital camera and color photo printer kit... but they have no usable computer. Sure, they can print pictures, but now that their little flash card is full they can't take any more... Laughing Bang Head

So, I want to build them a basic PC. Don't have the harware lined up yet, but that should be the easy part... I want to use Linux since this is a freebie, but don't know how easy it is to acquire pics from a camera or print them...

Thanks.

I have done both with Ubuntu.

Used an USB card reader for my compact flash card. I think I used used the Linux "explorer" but I think they could use the included photo manager within Ubuntu.

As for printing, I would assume it depends on the model of the printer. It was easy in linux to print to the HP I have. But when shared to a Windows PC I needed special drivers. (linux host didn't push drivers to windows client)

Well, this would be the only PC in the house, so sharing won't be an issue... Laughing

Just as long as that one can view, save, and print pictures with reasonable ease it should be fine.

Think that is possible?

May have found a deal on a used Dell PIII 1.3 GHz... Laughing

I don't know about HP software on Linux, but you can plug in the SD card if you have a reader and access it like a folder. If you plug in the camera directly, most also work the same way - just access them like a folder. Never used an HP model but if they're like Kodak you may need to use gphoto2 to access the camera.

OK, so far so good. Doesn't have to be Director, just something like it.

So getting the pics is no problem it seems... How about a simple way to print them? Is there something like "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" maybe?

Oopen to suggestions there. Don't care what I use, if one choice happens to have better options. Was planning on using Fedora, as I have made it look pretty much like Windows on my Daughter's PC, and would just do the same again here... Unless someone had a better idea. Grin

Playing around with gThumb Image Viewer on my Fedora install seems to be the ticket. I hooked up an ancient camera (a serial connected Fuji MX-1200) that I can't use with Windows since '98, and it worked. Detected the camera, downloaded the images to a folder, and offers to print them, too (just no printer on that PC right now to test that).

Hoping USB works even better, as I forgot how painful it is to download over Serial!
