I have done both with Ubuntu.

Used an USB card reader for my compact flash card. I think I used used the Linux "explorer" but I think they could use the included photo manager within Ubuntu.

As for printing, I would assume it depends on the model of the printer. It was easy in linux to print to the HP I have. But when shared to a Windows PC I needed special drivers. (linux host didn't push drivers to windows client)
