my first post, great forum guys.

i have a 1.3 AMD that idled at 36C and was 39C at load with my Thermaltake silent boost HSF. after reading http://www.bigbruin.com/html/lapping-guide.htm i was motivated to lap my cpu cooler. so i did. now after using artic silver 5 to re-install it my idle temp is 39C and load 41C

any ideas why my temp would go up....rather than DOWN?!? Mad

First off Welcome to Big Bruin.

Could be many things. You might try reseating the heat sink again maybe it is not sitting flush on the CPU core. You could have used to much thermal compound. Too much is worse than not enough. Also did you follow the guide correctly? Are you sure the bottom of that heat sink is perfectly flat?

I'm with dadx2mj... I would look at the thin-ness of the Arctic Silver... A razor thin layer is all you want. If the heatsink is well seated, smooth and flat, that would be my guess.

And... welcome! Grin

thx for welcome, im gad to have found you guys. try advertising the forum. Laughing

i have followed the guide step-by-step. especially the glass and water. i used the same amount of artic paste as i would have with thermal paste, might be a bit too much. could it be that the artic silver 5 i bought at Fry's electronics has the smae problem the OCZ paste did(less than 1% silver)?

btw, thanks for the QUICK replies!

I don't think the AS5 would have the same problem as the OCZ stuff.

Keep in mind, AS5 needs a few days to "CURE" as it were. That is, its needs a few days to get to its proper consistancy.

okay, i did not know a thing about the curing, but that i researched it... AS5 takes only a few days of run time to cure. i have had it for about 5 days now and temp is still higher than prior to lapping. tomorrow i am going to take off cooler and inspect amount of paste, maybe scarpe some off, then carefully re-install, and make sure it lays on properly. Now if that doesnt fix my problem, i will forgett about the $40 bucks wasted on the cpu cooler, sand paper, paste, and go with a watercooling setup.

Thank you all who have replied.

I have had the exact same thing happen, actually it still happens!!! Sometimes things just don't lay down right, and I have to pull off the sink, clean everything with ISo alcohol, reapply a TINY bit of AS and reinstall.

It takes very little, I usually get half a BB sized blob on end of syringe, stick it to the center of die, and then smear it around the die with a finger covered in saran wrap. Some if not most of the amount I put on comes right back off on the saran wrap. Paper thin is actually very close to being right. Remember, the better the surface of the sink, the less AS is needed also.

Pull it off and try these hints above. Let us know if it helps temps.

OH and Welcome to BB!!!! Wave Wave Wave Wave

Welcome... I'm in agreeance with these guys. Make sure you remove ALL the AS5 on their, and apply it new.

I use a credit card/id card (old ones of course) and apply it so it's a nice even THIN coat.

First thing I would try is to clean the heatsink and CPU with denatured alcohol, then put some plastic over your finger and rub the AS5 into the heatsink and wipe it off. Then get a razor (clean it also!) and spread a thin, even layer of AS5 over the core.

I quit using AS months ago, because Shin Etsu is much better. You apply it in a totally different way and you can't mess up the thickness or even-ness. If you'd like to get some X-23 or G-751 and instructions on how to apply it, let me know.

Also, what grit did you go up to? And did you polish it or just stop with the sandpaper?
