I'm in California, and like others have posted, I could get a permit at 15.5 that allowed me to drive with a licensed driver in the front passenger seat. The permit was acquired via a written multiple choice test. At 16 I was allowed to take a driving test to get my license. This license, until 18, is a provisional license, meaning basically that if I take some cough syrup I'm over the legal limit to drive, and I get less points on my record before my license is suspended.

To my knowledge the main thing that has changed today is the requirement of signing off for 25 hours of driving, X many of that must be in nighttime conditions (I don't know X). Also they limit who can be in the car with you, to help prevent situations that are known to be accident prone. (I know I feel safer not seeing 7 16 year olds packed in a subcompact barreling down the street)

In my area, speed limits are the usual 25 in residential areas, 15 in areas by schools or down alleys. 35 on busier, multiple lane streets, and 65 on all straight highways. Highways that have more twists and turns, and don't have onramps will typically be 45 to 55. The closest 70 road is the previously mentioned I-5 which has only onramps with a lot of run-up time and typically is very very straight and flat. In southern California I know that there are streches of I-5 that are 75.

Of course, all these speed limits apply pretty much to the slow lane. If you are on a 4 lane highway and are in the left hand lane, expect to go at least 15 over the limit, or be tailgated or high-beemed into the slower lanes. In Central California, they usually don't bother with this kind of behavior, they just pass you on the right side in the hopes that you'll move over after this happens about 4 or 5 times in a 20 second span. Problem is it works, so when I do high-beem someone in the fast lane (because they aren't going the speed limit or they are going slower than the rest of the traffic) they just throw their arms up in confusion and stay put.

LOL Enforcer...

You would REALY hate me then...if somebody does that to me, I hit my breaks. Softly at first, next time it's a bit more substantial, then I'll hit my breaks hard if the person doesn't back off, turn off the high beams. Also, I'll speed up get next to a truck, then slow down if you piss me off. Grin heheheh

Anyways...I believe it's been pretty much said what it is here in Iowa, but I believe they also have some other restrictions in place. Not sure if these ever passsed...

If you get 2 tickets before you're 18, your license is revoked.
If you cause any accident before you're 18, license is revoked.

When I was 15 and a half, here in California I could have gotten a permit, and use it to ride a motorcycle, only to school or work…….mom and dad wouldn’t let me, but I started driving with a licensed driver, and got my license on my birthday…….when I lived in England, back in 1974 I rode a motorcycle, and had friends off base that were 15, and they could ride a moped, as long as it’s motor was under 5 horse power……….wobbles

Hack I think you better talk to you CHP buddy again. Gopeds are not street legal. They have no speed measuring device or head lights or brake lights the list goes on and on and all are required to be street legal in Ca and most states.

Laughing ...they are classified as bikes as long as they are under 40cc. so if i stay on the side of the street and use hand signals when cars are present i am good to go...u can read the laws on theri website...but its basically exactally like bikes and they cant go over 20mph...mine does 35 <---man i am a badass. and they have to be so quiet.

If you do 70 on a dual acrrigeway or motorway, you are probably the slowest thing on it. Most cars travel between 80-90 mph, or higher. If you high beam someone to askthem to pull over, they will pull over, after putting their rear fog lights on to blind you first. Usually, if someone sees you coming up behind them they'll pull over.
