NZXT Precise 1200W Power Supply
July 12, 2007

Cables:

Now on to the cables themselves. Everything comes pre-sleeved by NZXT, which is a nice addition and makes everything look very sharp and clean. There are two types of cables here, all of the Molex and SATA cables are sleeved in black and have a slight texture on the outside. The PCI Express power connectors have a clear plastic casing over them making them very smooth, while also having a slight green hue. These cables are the same cables that where shipped with a Mushkin 650 Watt PSU I have, as well. This is a little surprising as it means both companies are using the same OEM for cables, and makes me wonder if they are using the same manufacturer for the units as well.

Something that I found was noteworthy was that this power supply came with the thickest power cord I have ever seen. I would have to say it is very close to zero gauge, and the size of this AC power cord means that this supply can and perhaps will draw a substantial amount of power. If you are using near the full capacity of this unit with a smaller cord, you might just turn the cord into a fire hazard.

One last note for this unit. While most power supplies that I have seen over 700 Watts have an extended form factor, being longer than the standard power supplies, this NZXT model has standard ATX dimensions. I do not foresee any issues when installing this unit.

Installation:

Installing this power supply is no different than any other, unplug and remove your old one, pop this guy into your case, secure with four screws, then simply plug in the cables that you will need. As mentioned, the physical size of this unit is the same as a typical ATX unit, so there is no need for concern about space as there is on some higher wattage units. For the purpose of this review I did not install this power supply into a case as I performed all testing on a bench mount test machine. This power supply has no extra external protrusions or length so it will mount into your typical ATX case just fine.

Performance and Testing:

To test the performance of the NZXT Precise 1200W Power Supply, it was installed into a system with the following equipment...

» Intel Q6600ES Processor
» Intel Bad Axe 2 Motherboard
» 2x1GB Mushkin XP8500 Memory
» Thermaltake V1 CPU Cooler
» Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750GB SATA Hard Drive
» LG 18X DVD Burner
» Gigabyte 7900GT Video Card
» One extra Antec 120mm Fan

This being the most power hungry computer I have, I felt it would be best suited to test this power supply, although I don't think I will be using even half of the power this unit can supply.

To test the idle condition, the system was booted up and allowed to idle at the Windows desktop for a minimum of one hour, then voltages were measured with Intel's Desktop Control Center software and a Fluke 79 multimeter to show what the difference between software and hardware reporting can be. To test the load condition, the latest build of OCCT was executed for at least one hour, and the voltages were again measured using the same method as above. The charts below also have reference results from a 650 Watt Mushkin power supply and a 600W Enermax Noisetaker power supply that have previously powered this system.
