Cooler Master CM Media 280 Convertible HTPC Case
February 23, 2007

Alternate Display:

There are two versions of this case available. The first (RC-281) does not include the multimedia hot keys, VFD, or the remote control. To get these options you need to purchase the RC-280 case. Here you can see the RC-280 panel up close. The very bottom of the panel looks identical to the RC-281 panel, and although the top section looks similar, it includes the seven multimedia keys, a VFD, and the remote control sensor. This section on the RC-280 has a place for the VFD and the remote control sensor, however the electronics are not included.

Turning the RC-281 bezel over reveals multiple PCBs which contain the electronics for the multimedia buttons, VFD, and remote control. The lower PCB is identical to the one on the RC-280. If you look at the sides of this section, you can see four tabs which you will need to release in order to remove it from the front bezel.

The below left image shows the connections that are common between the two panels. We have the standard front LED/button headers, dual USB, Firewire, and audio connectors (two sets, HD audio and AC'97 audio). The below right image shows the additional connectors for the RC-281 panel. There are once again two USB connectors (which gives your motherboard access to the VFD), multimedia keys, and the remote control sensor. The final connector is a standard floppy connector used to give power to the VFD.

If you receive the VFD model, you will also receive a Windows Media Center remote. Here you can see both the Microsoft Media Center remote and the Cooler Master Media Center remote (on the right). They are very similar and include all the necessary buttons, but there are a few additional buttons on the Cooler Master remote which will allow you to press a single button to start up non-Media Center applications such as SnapStream.
