ECS KN1 SLI Extreme Mainboard
November 07, 2005

Setup and Testing:

To test the ECS KN1 SLI, I installed it in the following system:

• AMD Athlon 64 3500+ processor
• 1GB Ultra 3200 DDR (previously reviewed here)
• 2 - PNY Geforce FX 6600 Ultra video card in SLI
• 2 - Seagate 80GB in RAID 0
• 1 - Hitachi 40GB

Here you are able to see how it all looks once it is put together. I have also installed a purple CoolerMaster SATA cable, supplied by ClubIT.com, which matches the motherboard nicely.

Currently my CPU heatsink of choice is the Arctic Cooling Freezer, which has been a top performer in all my past tests. Here you can see how close the fan on the Freezer comes to the main PCI-E video card. I might have to find a new CPU cooler to replace the Freezer as I am not comfortable with this small amount of space. It does make me wonder if large CPU coolers like the Thermaltake Big Typhoon would fit at all.

Going along with the size of the Freezer, here you can see how close it is to the rear 40mm exhaust housing. Again, I have a concern that the newer, larger CPU coolers will not fit well on this motherboard.

Finally, here you can see some randomly flashing LEDs that indicate whether a port is in use. If the port is in use, the LEDs will turn off. While this is a neat effect, I would imagine it could get old or even clash with a specific color scheme. Unfortunately there is no way to turn off these LEDs.
