Thermaltake BlacX Hard Drive Docking System
March 21, 2008

Conclusion:

The Thermaltake BlacX Hard Drive Docking System seemed like a great idea to me prior to getting my hands on one, and I am no less impressed after the review. While not a mobile solution, it is much more convenient than a traditional hard drive enclosure for those with multiple drives to be accessed from one location. Being able to pop in either 2.5" or 3.5" hard drives is an added convenience that most external enclosures just can't offer.

In addition to convenience, the BlacX offers respectable USB 2.0 data transfers, and adds no noise or heat to the drive being accessed. The only negative I can see is that the PCB on some drives winds up being exposed while in use. While this may not ever be a problem, caution should be used when handling or working around the BlacX in order to avoid creating a short circuit and damaging the drive.

A search of PriceGrabber reveals several familiar names carrying the Thermaltake BlacX Hard Drive Docking System with prices starting at just under $30 (US). While this price is comparable to what you would pay for a portable hard drive enclosure, if what you are looking for is extremely convenient access to hard drives in a more stationary setting, the price is definitely appealing.

Considering the performance, price, and ability to support both 2.5" and 3.5" SATA drives, the Thermaltake BlacX Hard Drive Docking System earns the awards of "Highly Recommended" and "Great Idea".

Pros:

» Respectable USB 2.0 data transfer rates
» Supports 2.5" and 3.5" hard drives
» No noise
» No added heat
» Reasonably priced

Cons:

» Hard drive circuit board is exposed while in use, which could lead to inadvertent damage
