Legal to ride on the dashed line between lanes? I find that hard to believe. Especially that many times these guys are bobbing and weaving to avoid mirrors, wide trucks, etc... Just seems like an accident waiting to happen, so I can't imagine a state saying please do that.

As much as lane splitting is disliked - it does save gas and room on roads that are otherwise at a stop. If the bikes can get off the road and make room for cars to move up its much better for the 4+ wheeled people.

...now, they cant go rocketing up between cars. They have to putt at a safe speed and exit the highway when they reached their desired exit. They are not allowed to use lane splitting to get to the front for the purpose of getting ahead of stopped traffic.

Other things I have just read say it is only legal in California. What can't you do out there?

Looks like my plan is OK in NJ - especially if I get them to hit me while doing it. Grin

I have never seen it like that... It is usually fast and reckless, and within inches of an accident.

yes, in CA, Safe and Prudent, and most of the motorcycles know that. I've seen a couple guys pulled over (and they were on crotch rockets) for lane splitting like dillholes. Here in Colorado, I'm stuck with the rest of the traffic. I was a little miffed about that when I moved since it was a great reason in CA to get a motorcycle (Traffic jam? Just keep going) even with the limitations. When I got my license there, they were saying that you couldn't go faster than 5-8 mph than the surrounding traffic so if it's all stopped on the freeway, your max was 8 mph even though most did 10-15.

Had a buddy in CA who used to go by my stuck-in-traffic a$$ on one wheel, across the Benicia bridge doing at least 60...

He even went by me on the FRONT wheel only one time...
