qwwwizx, how do you keep it so cold?
could you use coretemp to see the single coretemps and post them?
i got idle 45°, 45°, 47°, 49° and mobo 32°
loaded (24h prime) im doing nearly 70° on all cores and nearly 50° mobo temp...
and i made it too, pci-e setting to auto and then fsb 333 is possible. i hat to raise mch and fsb voltage a little bit, now its rockstable...
doing 13388 3dmark06 whith slightly overclocked 8800gtx, and temps are ok for an aircooled system...

Hi,

I downloaded the Core Temp app. from Npultra, and it seems that there is a lot of difference between the different applications that monitoring the heat of the CPU.

It seems that the Core Temp show the temperature inside the core, the temperature on the hottest place. The other applications that I have, PC Probe II and I.A. Booster shows the temperature based on the thermal probes on the motherboard or something like that. The temp shown in Core temp is much higher than the others.

I have attached a screenshot with each of the temp. applications running together, taken when the system is almost idle. Running, 11 Internet explores, Soundmax, MSN, and the temp apps only.

Now I will try make it crunch some numbers to see if it is really stable and how heat goes up.

I can see that people need to login to this forum to see the attachment of the message before.

Here is a cllip of the temp log from core temp. It is generated while running Futuremark 2006 v.1.10.

The temps I'm talking about are die temps read via coretemp.

qwwwizx,
What are your ambient temps? I would try to reseat your hsf first. I did notice that CoreTemp shows a VID of 1.325 for your cpu while it shows 1.275v for mine. This would lead me to believe that your cpu requires slightly more voltage to run stock, which would result in higher temps than me. Since I live in Alaska, my ambient temps are 68-71f so it keeps my system quite cool.

Hi Acruxksa,

I guess the ambient temp here is around 25c-27c at the moment. I havent really done anything to the CPU heatzink. It is running at full speed all the time.

Compared to your system: I can say that I have my DDR2 6400 memory pushed to 860 MHz and my PCI-express bus to 2.800MHz. I dont know if these settings will have any impact on the CPU?

Otherwise you might have a better suited overclocking CPU than I do.

Furthermore I just read about another guy here, lapping his CPU to get more heat from the cores to the HSF. Lapping a q6600

Hi, does any of you have experience with the following setup? I'm waiting for my order to arrive and was wondering if you think i could achieve a rock solid 3Ghz setup Smile

My goal is not to modify my setup as i think it will be pretty silent but i was just wondering what would the maximum (very) stable config be...

So here are the specs:

Case:
P182 Black
Corsair CMPSU-620HX

CPU/HeatSink/Board/Ram/Cards:
Q6600 (105W)
Scythe Ninja Plus Rev.B
P5k-Deluxe
OCZ Platinum XTC PC2-8500 2X1GB DDR2-1066 CL5-5-5-15
EVGA 8800GTS 640MB

And an extra Noctua 120mm fan... (Maybe i'll get another one if i put use this one to have the fan count up to 2 on the ninja HS).
I'll try and get some AS5 thermal paste too today while waiting for it ... Wink

qwwwizx,
I would still try to reseat the hsf first. Take it off, check the contact patch so see if it is making good contact with the cpu (ihs). It looks like the guy in the link you posted got some real improvements by lapping the ihs. I have even seen / heard of people pulling the ihs off, which I wouldn't recommend. Lapping it may help you though. I think you should be able to bring temps down with a combination of reseating and some case flow improvements. If this doesn't work you can then try lapping the ihs. I don't think the differences in our cpu's, memory and ambient temps should amount to more than 5-6c in cpu die temp. Shoot for the mid 60's and you should be ok.

RRA,
3.0Ghz seems to be a nice setting for these cpu's. The only other real option that I see is 3.2Ghz (8x400). You certainly have the memory to go higher, but it's a question of heat and noise. I read about people getting as high as 3.6Ghz on air, but I'm pretty sure they aren't doing it with out some serious fan noise Grin .

Hi acruxksa,

I will try to reseat it next weekend. Lapping is the last thing I want to do - but it might be nessesary.

Hey,

I just picked up a Striker Mobo With a Q6600 and PC6400 800Mhz Black Heatspreader G.Skill Ram. Could anyone offer some advise on if I can play with O/C on the standard HSF? or should I wait?

Thanks,
Hunz.

You can certainly see what you can get with the standard heatsink, provided you use moderation and keep a close eye on temperatures. I use CoreTemp because it gives actual die temps, but there are other programs out there that do the same thing. Intel's TAT for instance. I'd keep the voltages around 1.35v and temps in the mid 60's or below at least initially. Once you get a feel for how hot things are you can adjust from there.
