So I bought a new motherboard... the ABIT AW8D. Great board, tons of nice features...

I didn't even think about it before hand, but knew it had two x16 PCIe slots. I assumed SLI for some reason, but it is actually Crossfire capable.

The weird thing is... Included with the nice bundle of accessories is a SLI bridge. Think its an accident or can I do something with it?

If you look at pics at stores carrying it, they show the bridge... listing

I think I've read that the SLI/Crossfire support issues are starting to go away. ..that some chipsets already cross support either flavor.

The Intel 975 being one of them..

I know Via, SiS and ULi are all working on or have out chipsets that go both ways. ...with driver, BIOS, or setting changes required for it to work. Performance though is less then a purebred chipset like ATI's for their own Crossfire, or nVidia's for their SLI.

Aren't SiS and ULi all nVidia now?

Anyways, I think nVidia could work with ATi since it's going to be AMD.

The documentation with the board doesn't mention SLI anywhere (that I have seen yet), but they do talk about Crossfire.

I thought SIS (at least in part) became XGI... And XGI bought Trident, and then sometime not too long ago ATI bought XGI... Laughing

From motherboards.org - "Strangely, ABIT decided to include an SLI bridge and a bracket. As the AW8D does not support SLI in any way this is very strange."

I thought ATI was going cabless for Crossfire. Still doesn't explain the bracket and bridge.

Unless they needed to add it to raise the price of the board
