this just happen today . ( OK we all have one in the family -not the brightest light bulb )
my brother in-law stops in to the dodge dealer by his home on his way home from work to look at new trucks . the salesman get a hold of him and about sold / lease him a new 2006 dodge ram 150 4x4 4 door , 5 speed auto ,v8 ,am/FM CD , 6 ft bed .
has a sticker price of 30 plus thousand . anyway he tell the salesman he has his car for a trade a 5 year old ford windstar fwd.
the salesman works it all out . he to turn in his windstar.
my brother in-law calls his insurances company finds that his payments will go from $60 a month to $110 a month .thats fine and dandy !
the salesman tells him with his ford windstar as trade and $3500 down he can lease the new dodge ram 150 for 27 months at payments of $278
we'll then my brother in-law calls me and decides to change the deal a bit .he offers them his ford escort .(dealers not seen this piece of junk )
then the dealer tell my brother in law never mind we don't need a trade in !
my brother in law calls me back again .
and saids he be by to take for a ride and to the dealer
.i say fine i want to stop him he cant afford a new car he trying to sell his home because he can't make the payments .right now he is bringing home like 1-2 hundred more then his bills less food
so how the hell would he make those car payments .

anyway all said and done i talk him out of buying the truck .
then he tells me the salesman and the sales manager .had made him a special deal were they got him a employee discount and he was to give them $500 cash on top of the down payment to seal this deal !
and what other specials they set up for him was a free oil change every 3 months or 3000 mile and inspection .for the nice price of only $8 a month rolled into the payment .
and he still had to pay for plates and title !
I'm not sure what else was done in this deal but it all seem rotten to me .

i forgot IT WAS THE LAST DAY TO GET THIS GREAT DEAL !!!!!!!
I'm just glad i got him out of sign the paper work

theres a simple rule to cars.. you dont need one that costs more then what you take home in 3 months.

Why spend $30K or make payments for 5 years on something that'll do the same thing as a $2000 beater with an occasional repair? ..and thats get you from point A to point B.

Good point Knight, but it is nice to have a car that you do not have to check everything over every time you go somewhere. I have a 2004 Saturn VUE that is not that expensive to buy. I got mine for $19000 Canadian (so that's probably $10000 American Razz)Its an economical 4banger that gets around 34-36MPG. The peace of mind knowing that the better half with the kids should have no problems on their commute. (I get the older SL2)

my 1990 Buick Lesabre has only failed to start 1 time. ..and that was the night I got it. a $30 sensor. I bought it in April of 2004 with 82K miles on it, it now has 118K and 15,000 miles from the last oil change.

I've put maybe $500 in the car. tires, new exhaust, rear brakes. only paid $1600 for the car.

$2100-2300 for a car.. thats less then a year's worth of car payments on a cheapo.

Personally I think leasing if for fools. All you are doing is paying the deprecation of the vehicle and getting nothing more than a taxi ride for your money. Unless you personally LIKE to make payments all your life.

I prefer to buy the thing, sure the payments are a little more but then you pay it off and can have no car payments for several years. We're on a 10 yr rotation here. Every 10 yrs one of us will get a new car.

Reno, that's pretty common in all areas. Car Dealers have a good amount they can use to "dicker" with. Savings, cash rebates, etc. Usually they don't tell people them. Most dealerships around where I live offer totally free oil/check-ups for 3 - 5 years now with new car leases/purchase.

They won't tell you these things, as when they do tell you, they want you to feel like they've done you a favor, to help entice you to buy from them. Have to remember, all the dealerships I know of, the salesmen are on a comission based salary. Their sales are their livelyhoods...no sales = small paycheck.

Hopefully he realized that with leases, you have a VERY small number of miles you can put on the vehicle a year, then it's a VERY large penalty for each additional mileage. A friend ended up paying like 10K when she turned in her Lexus lease because of that...have to be careful with the leases.

I agree, you don't need to have a car that's worth that much to get around. On the other hand, you do need to have a car that's reliable. Think the car I just bought is the most expensive car I've ever bought and it was only at $20K

we fully agree with you on this now the car she turned in was like 25-40 % under on miles and we got a hell of a refund check from Saturn on the return a whole 14 cents may of been 23 cents . we will never lease again .and your always worried you be going over on mileage . we bought this saturn vue .
