I wanted to start a discussion on this cause I am intrested in opinions on this subject. I might cross post this to techbox.org and see what they have to say as well.

Being a computer tech (and outside of my job as well) I have run into people that own computers and say that they have no intrest in learning about computers, and if at all, they say that they just want to get on the net and check e-mail. They bring their machines in loaded with so much spyware, adware, and crap that I am hard pressed not to just re-install windows clean and have them start again. Why this almost hostile attitude towards technology? Is it that it just changes so fast that they feel afraid they can't keep up with it? Or is it just plain ol' human fear of the unknown? Mostly older people 50+ tell me this and some that are much younger. Let me know what you all think. Hopefully this could be a cool discussion. Thanks! Two Cents Confused Smile

I think its a combination of three things.

1.Technology changes to much
2. Fear of the unknown or different things
3. Lazy. They dont care to learn it. The time in which it would take to learn this stuff does not outway the cost to just have some one else do it for them.

i always tell ppl to play w/ it... when ppl came into my past job and spend like 200 to fix it they ask good thing you know about them... only thing is i dont tell them it takes like 5 minutes to fix... ppl could save so much money by taking 5 minutes to install a damned program or change a simple setting...

i think that ppl are just lazy

Well, I agree with these...

1.Technology changes to much
2. Fear of the unknown or different things
3. Lazy. They dont care to learn it. The time in which it would take to learn this stuff does not outway the cost to just have some one else do it for them.

But I would change 3 to just Lazy, and make the rest of it 4.

Why? I'm not lazy I know computers inside and out. BUT ask me something about a car engine, and I could barely tell you how to change the oil (ok, so I'm not THAT car ignorant, just an example). Not that I'm lazy, just no interest in how it works, yet I drive it all the time. I would rather take it to somebody that knows WTF that strange sound is rather than pop the hood and figure it out.

Oh, and I have built a car from the frame up before, just no interest in it, so don't have any desire to do it.

from what i have encountered most adults think they are too old and would rather have someone do it for them...much like cars some people want to race and fix theirs u and keep it running smoothly...and others just want a daily driver...i think it will always be this way.

It's funny, I just can't seem to understand it. I always compare a comp to a car. Same kind of maintanance and same kind of paperwork. Just not as much on the paperwork end of it.

I was telling a friend of mine the other day about how much satifaction I actually get out of what I do here on the bench. I love to teach and explain stuff about a persons comp to them but it is so frustrating to hear that they don't care or just flat don't even want to know. A person I know still has Windows 98 and refuses to upgrade to XP. I get so mad sometimes I just say, hell with it, it's not my comp. Just sit back and watch their comp go down the drain. :banghead:

I wish I could start a movement like "Take back computer education" or something, I don't know. Most people are set in their ways though.

what i have found is some people jsut dont want to upgrade they want their pc to last as long as their car...and if they dont want my help i dont offer it...like with my mom she wants me to make her comptuer faster without reformatting...and i dont have 6 hours to spend clearing the registry and delteing files so she said she is going to hire a "expert" to come to our house and do it...i told her i would gladly reformat it but i guess she would rather pay someone with about the smae expereicne as me 50$ an hour to do it... I also find it funny when people will pay $300 to have a computer fixed. The computer will be like a 800mhz celery computer. f#*@. They go add dvd drive, etc. And repair cost. You can buy a new damn compuiter with a dvd drive and start from scratch for $350. Its not fast. Or up to date. But hela lot better then what they have. And you try and tell them that and they see it as to much hasle.
