Testing (continued):
The next chart focuses just on the Tenda AC9's performance while comparing results from Speedtest.net's download test. The variable here is the distance from the router. The descriptions in the chart seem self explanatory, but for more detail... "Same Room - 10ft" and "Same Floor - 30ft" had the laptop and network devices with unobstructed line of sight views of each other, on the same floor of my home, at the distances specified. "One Floor Down - 10ft" had the laptop go down one flight (in a wood framed home) and over about ten feet. "One Floor Down - 30ft" had the laptop go down the same flight of stairs, but now out the door in to the garage at a horizontal distance of about thirty feet from the router. What you see is that the speeds do drop off as you get farther away, but honestly I think I would still accept the performance out in the garage. With an older TV and a ROKU installed out there, I am still able to stream HD without any issues.
The final test involved testing the local network performance by copying a 4GB MPEG2 video file from a NAS server to the laptop. Wired testing was done with the same ten foot CAT6 cable and wireless testing was done at about ten feet with the 5GHz WiFi radio. WiFi and wired performance was nearly identical and very impressive. I have rarely seen the NAS transfers look any better, so being able to consistently get over 110MB/s is a big thumbs up for the AC9.
