The drive is sold in a compact package which states it is 100% recyclable. When looking for a unit with Star Trek pre-loaded, be sure to look for the label as shown in the below left image.
Inside the box we find the drive, a short USB cable, and paperwork regarding the drive, the movie promotion, and the warranty.
The Basics:
With a quick inspection, the drive looks much like the other FreeAgent Go drives I have checked out (a 320GB and 250GB), but taking a closer look reveals some differences.
The first difference is that the number of lights in the array on the top cover has been cut down by more than 50%. That is fine with me as I don't really care to see the pulsing light show anyway. The more significant change is that the 320GB and 250GB drives had aluminum top covers and fairly sturdy plastic bases. The shell on this 500GB drive is constructed entirely of plastic, and the top cover feels a bit flimsy as it flexes under slight pressure. The 1TB unit we reviewed was also housed in a plastic shell, and I'd of course prefer aluminum if given the choice.
