Conclusion:
The
Seagate Barracuda LP 2TB SATA hard drive is an excellent choice for putting together a ‘green’ external storage solution. Putting this drive in an external enclosure, or better yet a NAS, will allow for some energy savings, especially if the drive is accessed frequently. And two Terabytes should be more than sufficient for the majority of home users. I can definitely see myself putting a LP drive (or more) in a NAS to replace my expensive home server.

The fact that this LP product line only is 5900RPM is not an issue. From the benchmark results we can see that the drive was very competitive with a 7200RPM drive, while still offering 'green' benefits in the terms of noise, heat, and power consumption.
This drive can be purchased for about $230 from many popular online shops, including
Newegg.com. This price is right up there with other comparable drives, and winds up being about $10 more than Western Digital's Caviar Green 2TB hard drive. Although it seems a bit high considering some 1TB drives can be purchased for under $100, if you consider the long term costs, it is not so bad.
With a massive amount of disk space, quiet operation, and low energy costs, I can recommend the
Seagate Barracuda LP 2TB SATA hard drive to anyone looking for a fantastic drive.
Pros:
» Performance on par with a 7200RPM drive
» Abundance of space
» Energy cost savings
» Runs cool and quiet
Cons:
» $10 more expensive than Western Digital's 2TB Green drive
