Next up is the rear of the unit which contains a “mode” button (allowing you to switch between video review mode and record mode), the “record” button, and the “power” button. The USB and composite outputs are also located on the rear of the camcorder behind a plastic cover. The second picture below reveals the two digital outputs along with a DC in jack for battery charging purposes.
Finally we have pictures of the bottom of the camcorder. The rectangular shaped plug on the bottom of the camcorder allows you to charge the unit on the included base. Also included is a threaded female hole to accept a tripod mount.
As you may have noticed, the bottom of the camcorder also has an access door where you can insert additional storage in the form of an SDHC card; this is also where the battery is stored. Use caution when operating the buttons on the rear of the camcorder, several times I accidentally flipped open the battery door when trying to toggle the camcorder on and off.
Testing/Usage:
The Samsung SC-MX20EL digital camcorder was evaluated over several weeks in different lighting and action sequences. Preparing the camcorder for use requires four steps: inserting / charging the battery, flipping the mechanical switch on the lens to open the lens cover, turning the camcorder on, and pressing the record button. We are confident a young child could use this camcorder due to its simple layout and controls.
The first place we recorded some footage was at the Henry Ford Estate in Dearborn, Michigan, USA. The video footage has been uploaded to YouTube for your review. For the most part the camcorder did a good job in the varying light conditions around the Ford grounds. The optical zoom is especially useful for capturing distant objects.
