The image below shows the final installation. It was mounted to the motherboard tray just to the right of the motherboard, and the whole process was very easy. This location seemed like a safe place to avoid interference with expansion card and drive installation, while also providing a good central location for routing data and power cables.
In addition to a pair of front panel USB connections, the IU01 received a USB Bluetooth adapter. The Bluetooth adapter is the perfect example of an external USB device that can be placed inside your case with the IU01. The only thing to consider is potential signal degradation due to electromagnetic interference or shielding from the case's metal.
Conclusion:
The
NZXT IU01 is a simple device that could greatly enhance the functionality of any computer case. While it isn't a must have item, it should have appeal to many enthusiasts who could either use some extra power to their front panel USB ports, use a few more internal USB connectors, or would like to mount some permanently connected USB devices inside their case.
Searching the web finds the IU01 on sale at some of our favorite online retailers for around $25 to $30 (US). The price isn't particularly high, but it may be more than many could justify for such a device. What I would like to see is for the IU01 to be incorporated into new cases from NZXT and other manufacturers. If it was included in a new case, it would definitely be appreciated.
In the end, the NZXT IU01 USB expander earns the BIgbruin.com "Great Idea" award.
