Packaging and Accessories:
The NodOn Z-Wave soft remote is sold in the compact package shown below. A cardboard tray just a bit larger than the remote itself is paired with a clear plastic top so that you get a very good look at the product inside. This view of the packaging doesn't provide much info, but you do get confirmation of the product name and that it is a Z-Wave Plus certified device. The bottom of the box provides a quick blurb about the Soft Remote in five different languages. Per the English version, we learn that it is a four button remote that can serve as either your primary Z-Wave controller or as part of your Z-Wave network using another hub, and that it utilizes one CR2032 battery (which is included).
The next image shows the NodOn Soft Remote out of the box placed next to the only other items included... a stack of paperwork, most important of which is a user's guide.
The Basics:
The NodOn Soft Remote is fun looking little device that is covered in grippy rubber that makes it splashproof, but don't confuse that phrase with waterproof. It would be just fine near the pool or in the bathroon, but don't get it too close to the pool or shower! It comes in your choice of six whimsically named colors, and we will be checking out a light blue version which they refer to as "Lagoon".
The front of the device has the four white printed buttons which remind me a bit of a game controller, as well as an LED located at the middle of this face. The LED is used for a variety of things, including inclusion/exclusion confirmation, to indicate battery level, to confirm a reset, and to indicate your choices while in operation. The back of the device is where we find the battery compartment, as well as some manufacturing and regulatory data. As shown, the battery comes pre-installed with a plastic strip in place that is just pulled out when you are ready to use your new remote controller.
The image below shows the Soft Remote with a scale to confirm it is a square with 56mm (just over two inches) sides. It is quite compact in this view, and at about 3/4 inch thick it is low profile, too. With the built in magnets, this device could be stuck to any steel surface in your home for quick access to a variety of functions without it getting in your way (or requiring a permanent installation).
