The Basics:
With the
Kingston MobileLite Wireless G2 unpacked it is clear the device has grown. As can be seen in the pictures below, the new version is about the same length and height as the previous version, but it is about 20mm wider. The additional size houses not only a larger battery (1800mAh vs 4640mAh), but also an Ethernet port. The device has moved away from the partial metal housing to all plastic, but construction still appears to be quite solid
On top of the device you see the Kingston logo. Turning it on its edge you find three (3) indicator lights, the power button, a reset button, a micro USB port, and the product name.
The first indicator is for battery status; it has three (3) states. Green indicates 51-100% charge, orange for 25-50% and red for < 25%. The second light indicates Wi-Fi activity, and the third indicates if bridge mode is active. The power button is also a mode selector. Pressing it quickly puts the device into charger mode, allowing you to charge your mobile devices from its internal battery. Pressing and holding the button boots the device and provides access to the full feature set. The micro USB port is for charging the device and connecting it to a computer to use it as a card reader.
On the opposite side you will find an Ethernet port. This to me really sets this device apart from the predecessor. Using this port you are no longer bound to bridging to a wireless network. By simply connecting an Ethernet cable you can make the device a mini wireless router.
On one end of the device you will find a full size USB port and an SD card slot. These are used for file sharing, transfer, etc. But the USB port can also be used to charge your other mobile devices.
