Testing (continued):
Real World File Transfers:
Next up, we looked at some real world testing. First, we copied our entire Office 2003 folder to the various drives three times. The folder contains 3,407 files and weighs in at 327MB. The results below are an average of those runs (with units of seconds, where lower is better). In this test, our GoFlex for Mac drive took three times as long to copy the files as did the other drives - even the Western Digital drive formatted Mac Journaled (HFS+), so clearly the partitioning format is not the reason for the lack of performance.
Finally, we tested the drives using a single 1.99GB .avi file using the same three run and average methodology (with units of seconds, where lower is better). In this test, our 1 Terabyte Seagate drive was slightly slower in writing the files than our 500GB Seagate drive and our 250GB Western Digital drive formatted NTFS. Both of the HFS+ drives were slower, but only by a few seconds each.
