The Basics:
Physically, the Mac version is about the same as the other
Seagate GoFlex ultra portable drives we've looked at previously, so we won't spend too much time scrutinizing it. It features the same slip-resistant silver housing with the Seagate logo stamped on the top.
Compared to the GoFlex 500GB drive we
reviewed back in June 2010, the GoFlex for Mac is just a bit wider and thicker. Even with the slight increase in size, it is still small enough to carry around in your pocket. Since this is a GoFlex Ultra-Portable series drive, all of the standard GoFlex cables will work. Because of the larger package size, this will not fit in the media bay of the FreeAgent GoFlex TV HD Media Player we
looked at in July 2010, but will work quite nicely via the USB port on the rear of the player.
Configuration:
For the GoFlex for Mac drive, Seagate is using a 12.5mm high drive - which appears to be the standard for all manufacturers of one terabyte 2.5" drives at this point. Compared to the 500GB GoFlex we looked at previously, drive cache has increased to 16MB, but it lacks NCQ support. As is standard with the Ultra-Portable series, this drive operates at 5400 RPM.
The next series of screenshots were taken from our test MacBook. Immediately after the drive was plugged in, OS X recognized and mounted the drive.
