Official Package - Mail Station:
For the last few years Synology has had the Mail Station as a package. Since DSM 3.1 the Mail Station has been included in the firmware, but if you want webmail there is still a separate package to install. It is painless to setup and configure the basics, but it gets a little complicated when setting it up for external access. You need a domain name and a dynamic DNS service (unless you have a static IP). Also you will need to check that your ISP allows port 25 (SMTP) communication.
Below are the two tabs of options when using the built-in Mail Station. The below left image shows the server settings, and the below right image shows the receiving settings.
In the image below you can see a screenshot of the webmail application, RoundCube. Although it looks very basic, it does the job.
Official Package - VPN Server:
The VPN Server package is only a few months old. It is a great idea for anyone who wants to access a device on their home network while they are not home. Although with Synology NAS services (like the File Station, Audio Station, Photo Station) properly forwarded on my router, I find the need to access my local computer and network not as necessary.
The image below shows the status tab of the VPN Server package. You can also see the active connections, set which users have the ability to VPN into the network, and some other basic settings. It is probably easiest to use the OpenVPN client, which is available for PC, MAC, and Linux.
