New Features and Improvements in DSM 3.2-1922
Every summer Synology releases a Beta version of the DSM (DiskStation Manager) software. It normally stays in beta testing for the month of August then the stable release is in early September. For the past few years I have tried to test the new features in each beta version and have found some major and minor bugs along the way. I recommend for anyone that just wants everything to work without headaches to wait until the stable version is released. I will list the key features in the beta version.
Directory Server:
» Directory Server is now available as a package without additional cost, providing an integrated account management service for DiskStations, Linux, and Mac clients.
LDAP Client:
» LDAP client is now built in DSM to help IT personnel integrate LDAP users and groups without manually recreating user accounts all over again.
Remote Folder:
» Remote Folder is now added to centralize many distributed CIFS file shares in your local network, that will help you navigate the network shares without having to know the physical server names or shared folders hosting the data.
Virtual Drive:
» Virtual Drive is now newly added to help you mount ISO files from your hard disk or from a remote server and used in the same manner as placing them into a physical CD/DVD/Blu-ray drive.
Syslog Server:
» Syslog Server is now available as a package, which offers a centralized log management solution for storing all your logs from different servers/switches/routers or any syslog-enabled device over the network.
» Email notification system will keep you on track of all your servers’ status regardless of where you are.
Mac OS X Lion Support:
» The Netatalk package has been upgraded to 2.2 to enhance the compatibility with Mac file service (AFP) in the latest Mac OS X Lion.
» Time Machine in Mac OS X Lion is tested and proven to be compatible.
Photo Station 5:
» The new Photo Station is redesigned to provide an easy-to-use and elegant user interface.
» The new photo upload wizard has been reinvented to provide the option to create thumbnails which makes it even faster to display the uploaded pictures on Photo Station.
» Facebook is now integrated to make it easier to share photos with your favorite social network website. One-way album synchronization is provided for you to upload photos from Photo Station to Facebook automatically.
» Pixlr and Picnik are now integrated, which are powerful online image service that will enable admin to directly edit the pictures from the DiskStation on the fly without installing additional software.
» Password protected album is now supported to help you share private albums with your friends more efficient without creating new accounts for them.
» Personalized theme is available for you to customize your favorite theme.
» Full-screen mode is now available in slideshow with brand new interface.
» The user account in Photo Station can now be either set to synchronize with DSM’s or to the existing embedded Photo Station user accounts.
» The blog editor now supports Google Chrome and comes with more features.
Google Cloud Print:
» Google Cloud Print service is now supported to help you print to your home/office printers from any computer or smartphone without driver installation, regardless of where you are. Please see the special notes below for the compatible printers.
UPnP Router Support:
» Automatic router discovery is now supported in EZ-Internet with UPnP-enabled routers, with just one-click to set up your router.
» More than 58 routers from ASUS, Belkin, Cisco, TP-Link, SITECOM, and other brands are now supported. For the complete list of supported routers, please see

DSM Mobile:
» DSM mobile, a dedicated Web-App, is now introduced to provide easy DiskStation management from mobile devices.
» You can now easily add and edit users, groups, shared folders or even access privileges right from your mobile device.
» It is fast and intuitive to enable or disable services, view system information and monitor resource with DSM mobile using mobile devices.
CalDAV Server:
» CalDAV is now supported to turn your DiskStation into a calendar server. All your CalDAV clients, including iCal in Mac OS, iPhone, iPad, or Mozilla Sunbird will be synchronized without efforts.
Package Center:
»The brand new Package Center is a centralized place where you can find and install useful packages for your DiskStation.
» The new visual style and improved user interface makes it simple and easy to identify, install and check updates online.
Download Station Enhancements:
» More file sharing and online video services with free or premium accounts are now supported, the supported services can also be manually updated online.
» Download Station now supports drag-n-drop for uploading BT from Windows desktop.
» BT now support single-port forwarding.
Audio Station Enhancements:
» FLAC music streaming is now possible with Airplay speakers.
» A switch is now added to help you enable/disable auto UPnP renderer discovery for better performance in Audio Station.
File Browser Enhancements:
» Now you may upload files to DiskStation by simply drag-n-drop the selected files from Windows/Mac/Linux Desktop to File Browser.
» Pixlr Editor, Express, and Picnik are now integrated, which are powerful online image service that will enable you to directly edit the pictures from your DiskStation on the fly without installing additional software.
» You may now preview your favorite movies in the preferred aspect ratio.
Surveillance Station 5 Enhancements:
» Safari 5.1 (32-bit) in Mac OS is now supported in Surveillance Station, Mac users can now enjoy using Surveillance Station with same experience as of Windows environment.
» All features can now work seamlessly across Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Firefox on Windows.
» More than 90 IP camera models from Canon, Basler, Sony, Vivotek, Zavio, Hunt, Alinking, FlexWatch, Intellinet, InStar, Foscam, SMC, and Brickcom are newly supported. For the complete list of supported cameras, please see here.
» The compatibility with ONVIF cameras from Sony, Axis, Vivotek, Panasonic, Hikvision and Lilin are now greatly enhanced.
» 49 channels live view is now available for monitoring more cameras at once.
» SMS/Email notification can now be scheduled by individual camera or event type simultaneously.
» Camera Group is now added to help IT personnel efficiently apply settings to live view, event playback, or privileges in a large camera deployment.
» Settings for multiple cameras with the same model can now be adjusted all at once using batch editing function; this is useful in a large camera deployment.
» Privilege profile function is now added to help IT personnel quickly assign or modify multiple users’ camera privileges.
» Surveillance Station can now conduct motion detection with MPEG4 and H.264 as well, you no longer need a camera with the built-in motion detection feature.
» Single camera stream is now supported to reduce required bandwidth by half, freeing resource to other network applications and reduce camera loading for improved system stability.
» Cameras of all codec types (MJPEG/MPEG4/H.264) can now use the same default DSM port 5000, simplifying the setup process for remote monitoring.
iPhone/iPad App:
» DS photo+ is now enhanced with multiple photos upload feature and the support of password protected album. Video streaming is also supported on Apple TV via AirPlay.
» DS audio is now enhanced with Internet radio feature.
» DS cam is now enhanced with the ability to live view single camera in MPEG4 and H.264 codec.
Android App (Coming soon on Android® Market):
» A new Android app, DS finder, will soon available for free download. DS finder helps you to easily monitor the status of your DiskStation while you are on the go, you can even start up the DiskStation remotely. MIS can also use it for locating the DiskStation in the massive server room with the built-in buzzer; In case of troubleshooting, MIS may also email out the DiskStation’s network/storage info directly from their Android phones.
Media Server Enhancements:
» You may now view the current thumbnail creation progress in control panel, and able to set the quality of thumbnails or even pause it for up to 6 hours and resume it later automatically.
» Customized indexed folder is now supported to help you select which folders also containing multimedia to be indexed in media server.
» You can now choose a device profile for your DLNA device to enhance the compatibility with your DiskStation.
» Video transcoding for MKV format is now supported on PlayStation 3 and Sony TV.
Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) Enhancements:
»SHR volume can now be ready to use within minutes upon creation, 95% faster comparing to traditional SHR volume creation.
DS211+ (2TB SHR volume)
» DSM 3.1 = 6 hrs 41 min

» DSM 3.1 = 9 hrs 36 min

VPN Server Enhancements:
» Privilege control is now integrated to allow only the selected users to connect DiskStation with VPN clients.
Shared Folder Sync Enhancements:
» Encrypted shared folder is now supported for maximum security.
WordPress Package:
» WordPress Package is now available to help you to install WordPress on your DiskStation with just a few clicks.
Management Enhancements:
» Every DSM user may now choose their preferred language regardless of the default browser setting.
» You will stay log-in until you log out DSM manually.
» IT personnel may now easily view/manage all the DSM services from System Information.

Special Notes:
» Remote Folder can support up to 100 mount points (network shared folders). Remote Folder currently supports CIFS only.
» Remote Folder currently supports CIFS only.
» Non-admin users can only mount Remote Folder under their “User Home”.
» Virtual Drive can support up to 16 mount points (ISO images).
» Virtual Drive supports ISO 9660 and UDF.
» The mount point for both Virtual Drive and Remote Server has to be an empty shared folder.
» Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) enhancement only applies to SHR volume with two HDDs or more.
» Multiple camera view on DS cam does not support MPEG4/H.264.
Limitation & Known Issues:
» LDAP client is currently not compatible with Windows domain, Microsoft exchange server, and IBM Lotus Domino LDAP Server.
» Remote Folder is currently not compatible with Mac Samba Server as a target.
» The password for the guest account in DiskStation has to be disabled if you wish connect the DiskStation from Mac OS X 10.7 with a guest account via samba.
