Over the past four years we have looked at a handful of 4-bay and 2-bay NAS devices from Synology
, and they have all managed to make a positive impression on us during those reviews. This review is going to take a look at the fifth Synology product at Bigbruin.com, and the model in question is the DS213j. This is a 2-bay device, like the DS212 reviewed in 2012
, but that is about where the similarities end. The "j" at the end of the model number implies that it is a budget friendly model that would be well suited for use in a small office or home setting.

If for kicks you were interested in comparing the DS213j specifications to the DS212 we covered last year, you will see a few key differences. The DS213j has a lower clock speed when compared to the DS212 (1.2GHz vs 1.6GHz), but it has twice the system memory (512MB vs 256MB), and it supports up to 8TB of storage (the DS212 was rated for 6TB).
