Conclusion:
As a simple NAS device allowing you to take any USB hard drive and attach it to your network, the
Seagate DockStar shines. Toss in the capability of using the PogoPlug service with up to four hard drives, and the DockStar becomes even more valuable for the average consumer. It is extremely easy to setup and configure, and anybody that can follow simple instructions should be able to use it with minimal effort. Other than a FreeAgent Go or a USB hard drive, everything you need to get up and running is included with the DockStar.
Probably the biggest complaint I have with the DockStar is that the easiest way to access your files from outside your local network is through the PogoPlug service at a cost of $30 per year (after the first year). I understand this cost as it makes it very simple for the average person to connect the DockStar and begin using it. If you decide that you do not want to use this feature of the DockStar, you can still access the DockStar on your local network simply by enabling SMB shares on the WFS (Windows Files Sharing) in the settings section of PogoPlug. This can be accessed even if you do not pay for the PogoPlug service past the first year.
The
Seagate DockStar network adapter can be found online at various popular retailers, including
Newegg.com, and the price is generally right around $99.99 (US). While there isn't anything quite like the DockStar on the market, there are similar things that can connect USB drives to a network or the Internet for much less money.

» No password needed to access files through PogoPlug could be a security issue
» Up front hardware cost and cost of maintaining PogoPlug access
