Conclusion:
The
D-Link DCH-S150 motion sensor and the DSP-W215 smart plug are both well built devices that work very well together. The smart plug is quick to react to triggers from the motion sensor, with the actions configured through your mobile device.
Overall the devices show a lot of promise but the app really holds them back. The responsiveness just leaves you frustrated doing even the simplest of tasks. It is also a little disappointing that the app is only useable on a network with internet access. I am sure there are some people that would like to have control over their devices while connected to the same network, but would rather not take the risk of their cameras getting hacked. I suspect the app will get much better soon, but with more 1 star reviews than 5 star I would say skip these devices till they get it straightened out.
One thing not mentioned previously is the curious wireless specification for these devices. The motion sensor claims to be b, g and n - but the smart plug is ONLY n. While this won’t be a show stopper for many, it is curious why they wouldn’t support b and g on the smart plug, it can’t be overwhelming bandwidth. My only guess is they decided to add cameras later which would prefer n networks.
You can pick up the DCH-S150 motion sensor for about
$38 at Amazon.com, and you will also find the DSP-W215 there with a price of about $50. The price of these devices would be very appealing if the free app that went along with them had a bit more time and money invested in to it.
In the end both devices earn the Bigbruin.com "Great Idea" award, as they seem well built and show promise, but just need some refining.
Pros:
» Good build quality
» Promising features
Cons:
» App is terribly slow
» Confusion over wireless requirements
» Does not currently support IFTTT
