Testing:
Old school spinning disks are fine for mass storage but if you really want to get extra performance or breathe new life into an old machine, one of the best things you can do is install an SSD for your operating system. But not all SSDs are created equal, so to make sure you are getting top read and write speeds you'll want to benchmark your drive. Today we will be running the Crucial MX300 750GB limited edition SSD through a few benchmarks, Crystal Disk Mark, ATTO Disk Benchmark, and AS SSD Benchmark to confirm the manufacturer's claims.
Crystal Disk Mark 5.1.2 x64:
This benchmark provides results to detail the drive's read and write performance in units of measure of MB/s (higher values are better). The first graph shows the sequential read results, where we see that the Crucial MX300 achieved 530.8 MB/s which wasn't the fastest in this group but it is right up there with the others. It should also be noted that this speed is exactly what Crucial claims it should be and is about 12% faster than their MX100.
This second test shows the sequential write results. Here the Crucial MX300 scored a 515.7MB/s which again wasn't the fastest but was only bested by one drive and is incredibly fast. Again the tested speed lines right up with the manufacturer's claims.
The final tests will give us an idea of how well this drive reads ad writes small 4k files. Again the Crucial MX300 wasn't the fastest in the group, but with every test it has been right up there and has had consistently great performance. Here we found the 4k read speed to be 323.4MB/s.
The 4k write speeds were 305.7MB/s
