Conclusion:

For an ultra-light netbook, the ASUS 701SD does what I expect it to. The included applications all run smoothly and allow the user to browse the web with ease. Just don't expect to do any serious work on a netbook like this. If you are simply wanting a low cost device to keep yourself connected when away from your main system, this is a great option.

Many people want to run the other way when they hear about Linux as an operating system. Those that are unfamiliar with Linux do not want to get into the details of it... They just want to get in and start using their computer. ASUS has done a good job on this custom build. Things are kept simple, and they are well laid out for the average user.

There are a few things to keep in mind on the ASUS 701SD. The screen is limited to 800x480 resolution; this is very low and many websites now require more room. Also, there is only one slot for system memory and one slot for solid state storage. You can upgrade either component, but it means replacing the existing pieces, and not just adding on. You can use the included SD slot for file storage, though, and a 16GB SDHC flash memory card worked nicely to increase the storage capacity. Also, don't forget that ASUS gives you 10GB of online storage.

The EEE 701SD provided for review may have been refurbished, but it could have passed for new based on my inspection of it. One area that refurbished units generally lack is with their warranties. We looked at a different refurbished netbook from Geeks.com in 2008 that carried just a 90 day warranty, but this one carries a 1-year warranty with the option for up to 3-years coverage from Square Trade for just $28.

Geeks.com is sold out of the ASUS EEE PC 701SD right now, but when they do have them in stock they sell for about $185 (US). While this price would make it the cheapest netbook they carry, it doesn't take all that much more money to get different units with much nicer specifications.

Taking into considering what the ASUS EEE PC 701SD netbook is designed for in relation to the cost, it earns the Bigbruin.com "Recommended" award.
