Initial Setup:
This is where the plug in style switches shine. All you have to do is plug it in and pair it with your hub and you are done. Pairing is basically the same as shown previously but I have included a few screen caps for clarity. Once you have this paired and you plug in you device you are set to start controlling, setting schedules, rules etc. You really can’t get any simpler.
Performance:
I didn’t notice any difference between this plug in style dimmer switch and the in wall versions. It reacts quickly to commands and the range seems reasonable. Here too the dimming seems to have a slight delay but this is manageable and this delay could be due to the hub as well.
If I had to pick on one thing it would be the fact the Z-Wave switch is not grounded. While this is fine for just about every house lamp, some heavier shop lights are grounded. So this could limit where you can use this.
Conclusion:
The GE 12718 Z-Wave Plug-in Smart Dimmer is a great way for people to get their feet wet when it comes to home automation. The installation is far simpler than the in wall types, but you get basically the same performance. I would like to see another option for local control though. GE/Jasco offer a
GE Z-Wave On-Wall Smart Remote but it appears as if it is designed to control several Z-Wave devices, I would like to see a paddle style on-wall switch that could be paired to this allowing you to add switch in a guest room so they don’t have to have access to your app to turn the lights on/off.
With these currently going for around
$40 at places like
Newegg Business, I think it is a great way for people to see if this whole home automation thing is for them before they dive right into messing with their homes electrical system.
Pros:
» Works just as well as the in wall version
» Adds an additional outlet to you duplex.
» Fast control from anywhere
» Stability, no disconnects
» Well-built with a 2 year warranty.
Cons:
» Doesn’t look as nice as in wall version
» Z-Wave outlet not grounded.
