Performance:
At this point the dashcam is fully functional and you can pretty much set it and forget it. With one exception, they recommend reformatting the microSD card every week. This can be done at the device by holding the Wi-Fi button or through the BlackVue Viewer.
While we are on the subject of the microSD, it should be noted that BlackVue considers the cards to be consumables and suggests to only use their cards. The card is marked as a 16GB Class 10 MLC card. I had a 64GB Class 10 UHS-1 card which should be faster than the OEM card so I tried it. So far I have seen no adverse effects and it increased my recording time from approximately 2 hours to 8.5 hours. Below is a chart from the manual showing the recording time vs. resolution and card size.
After using this for a few days I was quickly disappointed. Not because of this device, but I swear the other idiot drivers knew I had it and started to behave. So unfortunately I don’t have any funny/scaring/ridiculous video to share, but I will link a few videos for people to see the type of image quality you can expect. Overall the video quality is very good. I think the front camera provides sufficient detail to capture license plate numbers but the rear cam does struggle with this task. I did have some reflection issues in my rear window but this is not a fault of the device, it really just comes down to the shape of the glass. Accessing these videos is super easy too. You can play them back via your mobile device and you can even download them to you mobile device if you want to show co-workers the stupidity you saw on the way in. You can also remove the memory card and using the included USB adapter you can play these on a computer. As mentioned previously I had some difficulties watching videos with the included BlackVue Viewer but the latest download was flawless. These files can be played directly by the computer but you do lose some features. First thing you will lose is that each video (front and rear) are saved independently. So if you don’t use the included viewer you can’t see both at the same time. It also allows you to easily select different days and times as well as filter Normal, Event and Parking clips. These are color coded. This color coding is shown in the timeline below the video and in the list of files. Another cool feature of the BlackVue Viewer is the map info. Not only can you see the location of any frame there is an additional option called My Way Viewer. This option located at the top right allows you to see the string of GPS coordinates that were recorded. This is probably very useful for fleet vehicle management.
Exporting videos is a simple task but it also lacking some features I would have liked to see. When you export a file you can trim the start and finish time but only in that file. So if you had wanted to piece together five video clips to show the entire sequence of events you can't. Also when you export you lose the rear cam overlay.
