In mid 2014 Synology released the DS414Slim; a 4-bay network attached storage (NAS) device that had a twist. Rather than utilizing 3.5" desktop hard drives, this NAS uses 2.5" laptop drives. This makes it one very small unit, measuring just 105mm wide, 142mm deep, and 120mm high. This is smaller than many traditional two bay NAS devices, while still allowing it to be configured with up to 8TB of storage. This particular unit was supplied with (4) 1TB Toshiba MQ01ABD100 drives and was preconfigured in Synology's hybrid RAID. The unit is powered by a Marvell Armada 370 CPU running at 1.2GHz with 512MB DDR3. This is nowhere near the horsepower something like the DS415+ has but some concessions have to be made when you substantially decrease the footprint. Hopefully this doesn't translate into performance issues, but before we get into the testing here are the specs as provided by Synology.
