The Basics:
The review sample Western Digital Scorpio 250GB 2.5" SATA Hard Drive was provided as an OEM (bare) drive, simply packaged in an anti-static bag. When shopping for this, and other drives from Western Digital, it is possible to purchase them in a full retail package, or as shown in order to save a few bucks.
If you do prefer to buy a retail version, look for this drive to be packed in a box as shown in the promotional image below.
The data label on top of the drive provides useful information such as the mabufacturing date, power consumption, serial number, and that it is a Serial ATA hard drive. If you are upgrading a laptop drive, ensure that it takes SATA and not PATA.
Below you can see the underside of the Western Digital Scorpio. There are eight screw holes for two different mounting positions. Most laptops will have a cage that will be screwed into the side of the drive, while some of the 2.5" enclosures I have seen screw in from the bottom. The circuit board on the bottom is rather large and should be handled carefully.
In the last view of the Western Digital Scorpio 250GB Hard Drive you can see the power and data connections. These are standard SATA connections, so you could use the drive in a desktop, assuming you had the right hardware to mount it safely and securely.
