Tuniq Ensemble 1200W Power Supply
July 29, 2008

Conclusion:

I expected the Tuniq Ensemble 1200W power supply to perform well after seeing what the 950W Tuniq Miniplant had to offer a few months ago, and my expectations wound up being exceeded. The unit ran cool and quiet, managing to provide stable power to the beefiest system I could put together while producing a trivial ripple of a fraction of one percent.

I will admit that the system and equipment used to test the Ensemble were not able to take it to the brink of its capabilities, and I doubt many systems really could. Since some readers may be left wanting more, here are several links to other reviews of this power supply: guru3d.com, overclockercafe.com, cluboverclocker.com, and techpowerup.com. A variety of different test methods was implemented in these reviews and the bottom line seems to be about the same.

A search of the Internet finds the 1200W Tuniq Ensemble available at a few retailers, including Newegg.com and Xoxide.com, where the prices are $289.99 and $239.99 respectively. While the price out the door is $50 less at Xoxide.com, if you have the patience for rebates you could get $60 back on your purchase from Newegg.com. I'd probably be inclined to skip the rebate and not wait several weeks to save $10, but the option is available.

The price may seem high without a point of reference, but compared to other 1000W+ units, it is really rather reasonable. Many 1000W units have a price tag approaching $300, and the 1250W Cooler Master unit used in this review sells for $329.99 at Newegg.com. A $100 difference is definitely something that would get my attention!

While I am still convinced that it takes a rare system to truly require a power supply like this, there are reasons to buy one. Whether you have such a system, want to future-proof your system for planned upgrades, or simply insist on having some of the best gear out there, the Tuniq Ensemble 1200W power supply could be a great choice for you. In the end this power supply earns the "Good Value" award for its price as compared to similar units, and the "Highly Recommended" award for all that it has to offer.

Good Value Highly Recommended

Pros:

» High powered
» High efficiency
» Runs cool and quiet
» Well finished cables with ample lengths
» Plenty of hard-wired connectors with a few extra available with included adapters
» Competitively priced with other 1000W+ power supplies

Cons:

» Single 12V rails are back in favor due to the draw of high end graphics cards
» Oversized housing may not fit in all cases

Special thanks to Tuniq for providing the Tuniq Ensemble 1200W Power Supply to Bigbruin.com for review!
