Testing (continued):
The balance of the 3D games were analyzed using Fraps 2.9.4. This utility allows you to monitor in-game performance of any 3D game, and it was configured to record the minimum, maximum, and average frame rate values over 180 second intervals where game play was repeated as closely as possible every time.
F.E.A.R. Extraction Point:
F.E.A.R. Extraction Point is a DirectX 9 capable first person shooter game that was run at 1280x1024 and with the settings on high. As the chart below reveals, the HD3870 X2 beat the HD3870 TOP by almost 25% in terms of average frames per second, and by just over 29% when it comes to the minimum value.
Half Life 2: Episode 2:
Half Life 2: Episode 2 is another first person game that was played at a resolution of 1280x1024 and with the settings on high. The average frame rate value only increased by about 7% when going from the HD3870 TOP to the HD3870 X2, but the minimum value increased by over 50%! The game seemed to max out at just over 290 frames per second, and the HD3870 X2 actually trailed the HD3870 TOP by a few frames per second.
The last game to be analyzed is another one found in the Black Box with Half Life 2: Episode 2. Team Fortress 2 is another first person game (and my current favorite), and for testing purposes it was run at 1280x1024 with high settings, while using the Well map. 300 fps seems to be the ceiling for this game, and it also seems that whether you have an HD3870 or HD3870 X2, the performance is going to be great. The HD3870 X2 did better when it came to minimum and average values, but only by about 4-6%.
