Rosewill RX630-S-B Xtreme Series 630W Power Supply
September 23, 2008

Packaging:

The packaging that the RX630-S-B Xtreme Series 630W power supply is sold in is shown below. The high gloss black box features a carrying handle on top, and a golden logo that says "X Xtreme" on the front. Other than that, you don't get much information about the power supply inside, or even that there actually is a power supply inside.

Inside the box, everything is neatly arranged and well packed. The power supply is wrapped in clear plastic, the cables are all isolated in a box of their own, and thick black foam is used to keep things from getting damaged. In addition to the power supply, the kit also includes a user's manual, power cord, and four screws for installation.

External Examination:

Our first look at the Rosewill RX630-S-B Xtreme Series 630W power supply provided for review can be found below. The physical styling follows the theme set by many manufacturers in recent years; a high gloss black housing, black mesh wrapped cables, and black power connectors. The look is slick, and for those who like a little extra eye candy with their power supply, the RX630-S-B will provide it thanks to blue LEDs in the 120mm cooling fan. The back of the unit is relatively plain, featuring an open hexagonal mesh, an AC power connection, and a black power switch.

At this stage I had already noted two things worth mentioning. The first item is that the finish on the housing is like a magnet for finger prints and smudges. This might not be a big deal to most, but if you plan on showing off the unit in a case with a window, you will have to get in there and polish it after installation. Just taking pictures took longer than usual, as I had to buff it after repositioning it each time. The second item is that while a 120mm fan isn't small and can work just fine, it has been a while since I used a PSU with a fan this small. 120mm used to be big for a power supply, but now manufacturers can squeeze 130mm and 140mm units in there. A bigger fan can translate to better cooling at lower speed, but I'll keep an eye on that later in the review.

The next image shows the side of the power supply where the specifications are printed. All of the information printed at the beginning of the review is confirmed on the label, along with some manufacturing data.
