Performance:
When it came time to actually start using the Officejet 5610 I reverted back to my normal self and totally ignored the 138 page User's Guide and winged it. The Officejet 5610 was very easy to figure out! Between the obvious functions of the buttons on the control panel and the LCD display, I had no problems scanning, faxing, copying, or printing.
Winging it worked well for the basics, but I have to admit I found the User's Guide useful when it came to some of the finer details such as entering numbers into the fax machine's speed dial feature.
Printing:
Printing from the PC was just as with any printer. I did a rather crude time test with a stop watch and the Officejet 5610 lived up to its advertised claims on page per minute printing in both color and black and white.
Print quality was on par with what I expect from an ink jet printer. Out of the box, with default setting, the print was a little on the light side for black and white text documents, but seemed right on the money for color prints. This is easily adjusted in the printer properties dialog box, but I left it as is because it was dark enough for my tastes and I figure it will save on ink costs.
Ink cost is always a concern and searching the Internet I found both the HP 27 black cartridge and the HP 22 color cartridge for about $18 and up, so it pays to shop around.
Copying:
Copying is fast and easy. You can load the document or picture you want to copy through the feed tray or place it on the flat bed scanner. Simply press the "Copy" button on the control panel and the LCD prompts you to select black and white or color. Default settings will make one copy, but if you need more you can enter the "Copy Settings" by pressing the copy button twice and then use the arrow keys to select how many copies you want. You can also adjust other setting such as enlarge/reduce, quality, paper size, lighter / darker, and enhancements.
Faxing:
I have the fax connected to my VoIP adapter without issue, and I can only assume connecting to a standard phone line is just as easy. To send a fax you simply push the "Fax" button on the control panel and then follow the instructions on the LCD display. You will need to select black and white or color, just like you did when using the copy feature, and then input the number of pages being faxed. Next you dial the fax number on the key pad, and after the fax is sent, the Officejet 5610 prints out a report for your records with all the information pertaining to the fax such as time, date, number faxed, and if it was completed successfully or a list of any errors.
Scanning:
Scanning can be performed from the PC through photo editing software such as Adobe PhotoShop or the HP Solution Center, or directly from the Officejet 5610 control panel. You can save a scanned item to a chosen application on the computer or chose to have it printed out by the Officejet 5610. When doing the operation from the Officejet 5610 control panel you are cued to input your choices on the LCD display.
