Testing (continued):
3DMark 2006
The results from 3DMark06 are presented in terms of unitless "Marks" where a higher score is better. When the DDR2 and DDR3 are run at the same speed, the scores are very close. The DDR3 kit pulls ahead when it is set to its full rated speed of 1333MHz.
Real World Gaming
Using Fraps I was able to test the gaming performance of the DDR2 and DDR3 kits in two fast paced games. Fraps was used to record the minimum, maximum, and average frame rates while attempting to complete identical, two minute sessions in both F.E.A.R. and Stalker.
As the chart shows, once again the scores were close with both kits at the same clock speeds. Just like all the other tests, when the DDR3 kit is clocked at its official rated speed, it was able to provide anywhere from a 28% to a 32% performance increase in both games! Faster clock speeds are obviously the key factor.
