The Basics:
The appearance of the NZXT Avatar gaming mouse is definitely striking, but what initially cuaght my attention even more was the extremely low weight. Some may prefer a lightweight mouse for quick maneuvering, but I'd prefer a bit more weight just for some resistance and so it doesn't feel like it is going to float away. Many manufacturers have implemented adjustable weight systems with their gaming mice, and I was really hoping to find a compartment on the bottom of the Avatar after I first picked it up.
The shape of the mouse was the first aesthetic feature I noticed. It doesn't have the typical rounded shape, as the end of the mouse farthest from the cord is flared out. The design seems to make sense, and my hand was very comfortable with this extra surface area supporting it. You have the typical left and right buttons, as well as a chromed button on either side edge of the mouse, two black buttons centered on top of the mouse, and a scroll wheel that can also be used as a button.
Functionally the mouse is symmetrical, so it should be a good fit for righties or lefties. Other than a small panel of LEDs on the left side of the mouse, it is physically symetrical, too. The USB cable on the mouse is rather thin, but definitely long enough to reach behind a case kept on the floor.
The top of the mouse has a rubberized surface which provides a no-slip surface for your fingers, while the sides are more textured to help you keep a good grip on the mouse.
The base of the mouse features plenty of slick surface area to ensure that it glides with minimal effort.
