NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter
April 06, 2007

While working in an IT Department I occasionally run into a problem with a computer or hard drive where the system will not boot. Sometimes the user of the problematic computer has stored data on their local drive, even though they should store all data on the network shares, and I am then called upon to save their data.

At times when data needs to be recovered from a non-working system, I generally have to remove the hard drive, connect it to a working system via the appropriate internal cable, and move the data to the network drive for the user. This process requires a computer dedicated for recovering data with the proper IDE and SATA connectivity in order for it to be a universal system.

Newer Technology Inc., NewerTech, has developed a product to universally connect a hard drive directly to an open USB port. The idea seems like it will be very effective and save time while recovering data, or make it very simple to add temporary storage to a computer.

The retail box for the NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter is eye catching. Although you do not see an image of the product on the front of the box, there is a lot of text describing the types of drives that can be used. The back of the package displays some pictures of the adapter in use with the different size and form factor hard drives supported.
