Conclusion:
While many people will not need or want a rackmount chassis, many enthusiasts are using them for gaming, web hosting, music/video servers, or even as an HTPC. A 4U rackmount chassis such as the ICX-4830B-20BX is easy to get into and perform maintenance, making it a great choice for those on a frequent upgrade schedule. While many similar cases are designed strictly for business, this Maxtop offering provides a mix of features that would make it convenient to use at home, too. On top of that, the easily accessible intake fan filter provides a major advantage in keeping your rackmount system dust free and running cool.
One concern I have with this case (and it is a fairly major one) is with the short motherboard stand-offs. While this might not be a concern if you use a server class motherboard, I would like to see it be compatible with all types of motherboards, including those with CPU cooler backplates. We let Maxtop know what we found, and we were told that necessary improvements will be worked into the development of this product. Another minor concern is that a tall CPU cooler might not work as it could interfere with the exhaust fans.
Working in a server environment, I have used many rackmount systems from many major providers. There are more expensive rackmount cases that may provide more bells and whistles than this Maxtop case, but the ICX-4830B-20BX offers its share of goodies, especially for the price. A search of PriceGrabber doesn't turn up anything on this case, but looking to another sponsor shows that the ICX-4830B-20BX is quite inexpensive. Arrowmax, an outlet that deals just about exclusively in Maxtop gear, offers it for $65 (US), which really is a good deal.
The cooling performance, convenient installation features, and extremely low price earn the Maxtop 4U ICX-4830B-20BX Rackmount Chassis high marks. The issue with the motherboard standoffs is a concern, and hinders the final score. All things considered, the Maxtop 4U ICX-4830B-20BX Rackmount Chassis earns the rating of "Recommended" for anyone who has a motherboard without a CPU backplate.
Pros:
» Intake 120mm fan filter
» Easy to install removable cage for 5.25" and 3.5" drives
» Dual 80mm exhaust fans
Cons:
» Short motherboard standoffs are a serious concern
» Tall CPU coolers may interfere with exhaust fans
