The physical installation of the frame is pretty much a no-brainer. Simply use the four bolts provided to secure it to your license plate in its existing location. If your vehicle happens to use screws (or some other method of installation) instead of bolts, just retain the original hardware and use that instead.
The only thing you may want to consider is that the large array of LEDs is going to cover up any tag line information at the bottom of your license plate once installed. For example, any New Jersey drivers can say good bye to the "Garden State" text found on the typical plate.
Once installed physically, setting up the license plate frame is another matter. Although it may seem like a ridiculous requirement for the typical frame, some instructions are crucial to the proper setup, and the review sample did not include any. Browsing the Roadmaster USA website turns up this PDF manual, which provided everything necessary to get the Scrolling Digital License Plate Frame personalized in a relatively short amount of time.
I will not go into the steps required to program a message, but with the manual (and remote control) in hand, it is not very difficult. It does take a bit of time since you must scroll through each character one at a time while advancing through your message, but once you get the hang of it the pace should pick up.
With the wireless remote in hand I proceeded to program my first two messages in about four or five minutes. The first one simply says "BIG BRUIN" in all upper case letters, and is set to scroll at speed 2. The second message says "Tech News & Reviews!" and is set to scroll at speed 3. The second message took a bit longer to setup, not just due to the length, but due to the use of both upper and lower case letters, as well as symbols.
The images below show my best effort to capture the scrolling message "BIG BRUIN" at speed 2. Although the pictures may not convey it, the text is bright and clear, and easily visible from quite a distance in ambient lighting or in the dark.
To better demonstrate the performance of the Roadmaster USA Scrolling Digital License Plate Frame, the following YouTube video shows a twenty second clip of the frame in action while alternating between the two programmed messages. The text is much sharper in person, and the glow in the video and still pictures does not exist to the naked eye.
Hopefully the video clip shows that this frame would be a great way to provide details regarding a show car, promote a business, or tell other drivers exactly what you think of them (if you decided to use it on the road). The one problem with using this while on the road (other than the potential legal issue) is that you won't be able to change the message. The remote control requires a direct line of sight to the frame in order to work, so zapping it from the driver's seat is out of the question.
