Kingwin Revolution RVT-9225 Heatpipe Direct Touch CPU Cooler
October 24, 2007

Conclusion:

The Kingwin Revolution RVT-9225 Heatpipe Direct Touch CPU Cooler looks to capitalize on a new idea in the well proven method of cooling processors with heatpipe technology. By allowing the copper heatpipes to come in direct contact with the top of the processor, one interface has been eliminated and the thermal transfer can potentially be more efficient.

While the concept seems practical, this application just didn't live up to expectations. The cooling performance was about the same as the retail Intel cooler, which is never something to strive for, and the noise produced by the Kingwin unit was actually greater than the stock cooler.

The main selling points of this cooler are that its compact design will accommodate installation in systems smaller than some heatpipe coolers will allow, the installation is quite simple, and the air-flow spoiler is a nice idea that should really be developed further. While some may find the spoiler to be useful as is, I just couldn't get much out of it in terms of airflow or cooling to components on the motherboard.

A search of PriceGrabber shows a few popular online retailers carrying the Kingwin RVT-9225 for just under $30. While this is not a bad price for any aftermarket CPU cooler, it would really need to offer better cooling or produce less noise in order to make it worth considering as an upgrade.

The RVT-9225 may be a great idea, but it needs some refinement. I would be very interested to see a Kingwin "HDT" cooler that used a 120mm fan on a larger array of aluminum fins, and perhaps that used another set of heatpipes to leave less aluminum exposed to the processor.

Pros:

» Compact design will fit smaller systems
» Easy installation
» Vibration isolating fan mounts included
» Air-flow spoiler is a good idea

Cons:

» Louder than retail Intel cooler
» Air-flow spoiler didn't do much
» Cooling performance is marginally better than retail Intel cooler
